South African Jewish Emigration: The What, the Where and the Why

It is well known that the dramatic decline in the size of the South African Jewish community over the past fifty years has been driven largely by emigration. But who has left, where have they gone, and why? Drawing on the latest research by the Kaplan Centre for Jewish Studies at UCT, Reviva Hasson presents detailed, data-driven insights into these questions and reflects on shifting motivations, sentiments, and destinations.

ABOUT REVIVA HASSON

Reviva is a social scientist at the Kaplan Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Cape Town. She focuses on contemporary Jewish studies in South Africa, with a particular interest in survey data analysis. She holds a BSc in Environmental Science and a Master’s in Economics, both from UCT. Reviva coordinated the 2019 nationwide survey of the South African Jewish community and was appointed the Centre’s Research Officer in 2023. Reviva lives in Cape Town with her husband and three children.
