‘Journeys To The Interior: Unseen Works by Irma Stern 1929 – 1939’, an exhibition of original paintings and sketches, opened to the public on 22 April 2006. The portraits were loaned to the SA Jewish Museum by the Irma Stern Museum and the South African National Gallery.

Irma Stern is celebrated as one of South Africa’s most prolific and powerful artists and she is largely credited with playing a central role in introducing avant-garde art to South Africa.
