"UNSER SHTETL BRENNT!"
An evening of Yiddish songs & stories with guy schons

The South African Jewish Museum, with the support of Kultur | lx – Arts Council Luxembourg, invites you to an evening of Yiddish songs in the iconic Old Shul, performed by Luxembourgish singer and historian Guy Schons.

“Unser Shtetl Brennt!” (our little town is burning) is the title of a song written by the well-known Jewish author Mordechai Gebirtig in 1938, when houses in the Jewish quarter of Krakow were set on fire. The Yiddish songs that Schons will perform focus primarily on the precarious living conditions of the Jews in Eastern Europe, resistance to National Socialism and the Holocaust. Before performing each song, Schons will explain its meaning and context in English.
